Pokey MIDI PCB - Rev 1

A little shady

A little shady

The first revision circuit board came back for the Pokey MIDI synth. It is up and running wonderfully. Audio examples are the same as in previous posts, and I’ll put more together as the MIDI engine expands. This was all on a series of breadboards before, so it is nice to have it condensed down to a single printed circuit board. It is 4″ by 3″, with MIDI in, power in, and a 1/4″ line out.

It was mostly an exercise in Cadsoft Eagle part creation. I also needed to free up some desk space.

The rectifier is there in case anyone decides to hook up a power supply with the wrong polarity. Instead of exploding it will actually still work. Forty cents is cheap insurance. Right now there are two clocks on the board, but the next revision will only have one. The next revision will also have more than just the audio engine…

    Looks really great.
Is there any chance you could post some schematics etc?
I have two pokey chips that want to make some noise!
Looking forward to what the next revision has in store.

90% of the design is in the microcontroller code, and I don’t have any plans to give that out. Without it the schematic is pretty useless.

If you’re just interested in making noise, you could put together a big fancy logic circuit to use the 8 POT inputs to control the various sound registers. It would be a good challenge.

:( but i like open source.

No, that’s fair enough. Would you be willing to sell a finished model maybe at some point?
